Sunrise at Burnt Head

I will miss being able to take a 7 minute walk from my house and come here to see the sunrise....

The world is just waking up.

It's nice to share the sunrise with some furry friends.

Don't blink. You'll miss it.

Good morning.

Sleepy face and bed head. But I am happy.

Golden girl.

The Hootie.

And the Mills.

It was going to be a gorgeous day.

love.

Thank you Monhegan.

Time to start the day.

My Island Colleagues

When I started teaching on Monhegan, (almost five years ago now!) I came into the school as a lone teacher, right out of college, without the slightest idea of what I was doing. I had no curriculum, no experience, and really no support in terms of my teaching. I was scared, clueless, and quickly became very isolated. When people would ask me about what I was teaching or how, I would immediately become defensive because I was so insecure and sure that I was doing everything wrong, but I did not want anyone to know.

All of that has changed now because of something called the Outer Islands TLC (Teaching Learning Collaborative)! About two years ago this group emerged from the teachers of the outer islands one and two-room schools. How we came together is kind of a long story, but the important part is what we are now... a team. It is like all of our schools are now sharing one school. My students have inter-island classmates and I have colleagues.

We work together to plan curriculum, projects, lesson, assessments, field trips, and just super fun school activities and events. We collaborate using technology but we are also lucky enough to meet face to face throughout the year. We are dedicated to each other. We work not only to help ourselves and our own students and schools, but we work to help better each other's teaching and students as well.

The group has grown and changed over the last few years but the commitment and energy has stayed consistent. We are all so different, which is what makes us work. One member's weakness is another member's strength. When one of us is struggling, there is someone else who can pick up the slack. We have gone through a lot as a group, but we have seen what we are capable of and it is pretty stinkin' amazing. Not only have we bettered our students' education and really become innovators in the world of education and collaboration, we have bettered our own teaching craft because we have pushed each other to be the best we can be.

I also think one thing that can be said for our group, which may not be true for all education "teams," is we truly like each other. Over these years we have gotten to know one another in ways that not all teachers get to. We have fun together. We know about each other's lives. We struggle and succeed together. It is pretty wonderful.

I cannot really imagine what my time on Monhegan would have been like if the TLC did not form. I wonder if I would have lasted as long on? All I know for sure is that what the TLC has brought to me and my school is immeasurable. For me personally, it has allowed me to learn how to collaborate with others, grow as an educator, gain confidence in myself as a teacher and as a leader, and work with people I truly admire and respect.

Leaving the TLC is going to be one of the hardest parts of my time coming to an end on Monhegan. The possibilities are endless for this group and it is because of the dedicated teachers and our amazing coordinator (and the support from so many other fabulous people and organizations) that we have come so far. But, it is because of the TLC that I can go confidently out into the education world and know that my experience teaching on Monhegan and working with this group will help me with whatever professional adventure I want to conquer next.

Anne, Lindsay, Donna, Paula, Josh, Heidi, and Lisa.... thank you. I am honored to call you all my colleagues and friends!

Boss's Day Preparation!

As you may know, I have the best summer job in the whole wide world... I am a barista at the Black Duck Emporium... the best coffee and gift shop off the coast of Maine!
You know what makes this the best job ever? Not only do I get to drink lattes all day, meet fun and crazy new summer people, keep up with all the Monhegan happenings, AND bring my dog to work... I also get to have my two best friends on island as my bosses! Pretty sweet deal, eh?!

This year we added a new "duck" to our little cafe "flock." Gina, Gina, Gina! Another awesome lady who is a blast to work with. My awesome job got even better.

So when Gina and I heard that National Boss Appreciation Day was coming up we knew we needed to get to work. We met after school to make shirts for ourselves to wear when we took our favorite bosses out for breakfast on the big day!

The front: Pictures of us with our bosses... and it says, "Do you know how to best judge a boss?"

And the back... pretty accurate, right?!

And here are our lovely bosses on the big day! We made them shirt too.
They said, "Best Bosses EVER!" and on the back had our Black Duck group photo. Pretty spiffy.

We love our bosses.

Full Moon!

Some very beautious pictures from the night of the full moon last month!

Coming up over the backside!

Pure Perfection!

Bringing home the employee pool...

It was a sure sign that summer was really over and that the tourist season was done when Millie had to bring the "Employee Pool" home from her summer job... The Black Duck. I am pretty sure Millie has the best life any dog could ask for... in the summer she get to hang out at the shop... greeting people, licking up scone and muffin crumbs, meeting new doggie friends, and running away to the beach.

In the winter she gets to be the school dog which means playing with the kids, hanging in the school yard, finding lots of mud and dead things to roll in, and running away to the ice pond. Sweet deal.

But it was pretty stinkin' funny watching her drag home her pool.

Summer is over... bring on the peace, quiet, and WINTER!

After School Dog Walking Club

We don't have a whole lot of after school activities on our island (all though we have more than we used to!) But my favorite, by far, is our dog walking club.

We meet at least once a week (usually more.)

On this particular day, the clouds looked like huge cotton balls.

Wouldn't you just love to jump through them?

Four dogs and four people... 1 to 1 ratio. I like it.

Trail 4 - my personal favorite.

We had just gotten rain so it was rather muddy... perfect for dogs.

The clouds on the backside were more ominous then those fluffy white ones.

Quinn needed a break... but Stanley was ready to go!

Gull Pond... Millie's favorite.

Hanging buoys.

She is so happy.

Grey waters to match the quickly changing grey sky.

Mud prints.

Love these walks.

Crazy Light

I love when the sun shines through the dark clouds... making them look like they are outlined with gold thread...
I love rainbows....

Lots of rainbows.

I love thick, puffy clouds...

that are filled with light.

Here comes the moon.
Sun goes down behind manana.
